GENERATION 1

01. Christopher Scott [1] was born abt. 1575 in Hatfield, Broad Oak, Essex, England.  His wife's name is unknown.  She was not mentioned in his will and almost certainly predeceased him.  Christopher died in 1640 in Essex, England.

"Christopher Scott of Hatfield Broad Oak was identified as the father of New England immigrants Thomas Scott and Sarah (Scott) Graves based on his will. In his will he names the children of Thomas and Sarah, and these names exactly match the names of the children of the immigrants. The parish registers of Hatfield Broad Oak no longer exist before 1650, so it will be impossible to reconstruct this family from baptism records. Christopher Scott was born probably by 1570 and died at Hatfield Broad Oak, in the western part of co. Essex, between 1 April 1640 and 23 August 1640, the dates that his will was signed and proved. He was called brother by Henry Younge of Hatfield Broadoak, yeoman, whose will, dated 11 January 1619[/20] and proved on 12 April 1620, included a bequest "to my loving brothers Thomas Scott & Christopher Scott to either of them a peece of gold of vs vjd to be paid to them w[i]thin six monethes after my death." "Sarah Scott was born about 1599 the daughter of Christopher Scott and his wife.... of Hatfield, Broadoak, co. Hertford, England. The family lived in the east of Hertfordshire, a region along the River Stort. The church records of that area begin in year 1650, so if they were baptized there, the records are no longer available. Her sibling (brother) may have been Thomas Scott who migrated to New England in 1634[2] residing in Hartford, Connecticut. Sarah married Thomas Graves by 1621. Her surname - Scott is identified by the will of her father, Christopher Scott, dated 1640 which is partially transcribed at the bottom of this biography. The portion that is significant to this profile reads: "Item I geve my Dafter Sara the wife of Thomas Grave the some of fife pounds to be Equally Devided Amooung she and her Children mary grave Isaake John Elzebeth and Nathanell when thay come of the Age of xxj yeares to be paid within One yeare after my desese[.]"  Anderson in Great Migration also identifies Sarah Scott as the wife of Thomas Graves when, speaking of her brother, he says, "Thomas Scott may have been brother of Sarah (Scott) Graves, wife of Thomas Graves of Hartford." First settled in Cambridge; moved to Hartford in 1636. Died 6 November 1643 (died while dictating a nuncupative will on that date). (At a Connecticut Particular Court in early 1644 [probably in March], the "jury find that John Ewe, by misadventure, was the cause of the death of Tho[mas] Scott. The said John Ewe is fined to pay five pounds to the country and ten pounds to the widow Scotte")." Source

The children of Thomas and Ann are:

1 Thomas Scott (abt. 1595 - )
“From the will, the inventory ad the later deed of sale by the three daughters, we conclude that Thomas was not competent to care for himself.” Anderson also suggests he could have been either the oldest or the youngest child, but leans towards him being the eldest."  Source
