Alternate ancestry of David Hawk

On February 15, 2004 I received an email from Donna (almik@charter.net) a researcher who had found my website and questioned my ancestry of David Hawk which was published in the "Early German Hawk Families of Westmoreland County, PA" book by Kenneth Hawk Slaker (1990).  She sent me several attachments showing sources that appeared to conflict with what I had.  I am listing these below in the hope that someone can confirm David's proper ancestry and let us know.  Linda Howell was the researcher who published her material to the Slaker book showing David's parents were Michael Hawk and Delilah.  If anyone knows her current email address I would appreciate it!

I am working on my family tree. I came across your David Hawk.  Please help me understand how your David Hawk, is the son of Michael Hawk.  Do you have any proof of this like Michael's name on a marriage or death records or any other source. Or did it all come from a Book of someone eles's work.  I believe him to be the son of other Hawk from Hancock Co., Indiana. I don't have proof of that either. Just trying to find answers to some unanswered questions. Like why is your David listed with my family, as a son of Henry Hawk, of Sugar Creek Twp., Hancock Co., Ind.  Hope you can help.

Donna

I hope these help you to understand why I am interested in your David Hawk.  My line is from David's sister (that is a daughter of Henry Hawk) Susannah Hawk that m. Robert Downing. You see our David Hawk was also b. in the same year but  in Brown Co., Ohio.  I don't question that Michael Hawk had a son named David Hawk.  I just question if he put the right David in his book.  Or did he just find a David in Ohio that fit his David, so he then became his David.?

Taken from the Book History of Hancock County, Indiana, Its People, Industries and Institution By George J. Richman, B.L. Federal Publishing Co., Indianapolis, Indiana 1916. Under the Biographies of David F. Hawk, grandson of Henry. This part is said about the grandfather Henry Hawk.

" Henry Hawk was born on July 13, 1787, in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and Susan Flaugher was born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1788. Henry Hawk was the son of John Hawk, who was born in Germany. John Hawk, with his parents settled in Washington county. He was the son of John Hawk, Sr. Both he and his wife died in Washington county, Pennsylvania. John Hawk, Jr., the eldest of the sons, enlisted in Capt. William Berryhill's Company of the Cumberland Brigade of the Pennsylvania Militia and served until the close of the was. He was with Washington at Valley Forge and was present at the surrender of the British at Yorktown. David F. Hawk, the subject of this sketch, still has in his possession the army rifle which his great-Grandfather carried in the Revolutionary War. This gun was also carried by his grandfather, Henry Hawk, in the War of 1812. John Hawk, Jr., after the Revolution, was married and migrated to Mason Co., Kentucky, where he lived for twelve years. He was there joined by his brother Samuel, and they together moved to Brown Co., Ohio, where they settled and died about 1840. It was there that Henry Hawk spent the remainder of his youth. It was there that he was married to Susan Flaugher, the youngest child of Adam Flaugher and wife, both natives of Germany. After his marriage Henry Hawk farmed in Brown Co., Ohio, until 1832, when he came to Hancock Co., Indiana, and settled one mile west of Greenfield where he lived for a year. He then entered one hundred and sixty acres of land six miles west of Greenfield and one mile south of the National road. Here Henry Hawk, the grandfather of the subject of our sketch, built a large log house, containing two large rooms and a porch. He also built a large

hog barn and here in the wilderness made a home. In addition to being a good farmer, he was an expert weaver and wagon maker and it is said he could "stock" a plow as quick as a blacksmith could make the iron work and it is said of him that not the least of his accomplishments was the fact that he could turn a "hand-spring" at the age of sixty. He died at the age of seventy-seven years in September, 1863"

I understand the burial cemetery of Henry Hawk, The McNamee Cemetery, is just North of New Palestine in a cornfield.

Listed as a member of the Friends Church at Philadelphia which was organized as a result of a great camp

meeting held at Dye's lake in the fall of 1886 was a Henry Hawk & wife. Our Henry & wife had both pass on at this time. Wonder if one of Henry's missing children was also a Henry??

E-mail from Judy Warren on Troup, TX. Nov. 18, 2003

"Donna, Iam Judy Warren in Troup, TX, and will be 71 next month. Before my mother and my Aunt died. I

got the information from them that Susanna Flaugher was my g-g-g grandmother and she married Henry

Hawk. They had a daughter Catherine who married Whitfield True (my brickwall--don't know ho his parents

were and have been looking for years). I have since found out that Henry was b. 12 Mar 1787 in

Fallowfield,Washington Co., Pa. moved with his family to OH/Ky area and later moved to Hancock Co., Ind.

Henry and Susanna had 14 kids. I am trying to straighten out these Hawks. Henry and his sibs named their

kids the same names and it is very difficutlt to distinguish them. If you want to reserch them on Ancestry.com

you will see that Henry's father was Johannes (John) Hawk b. 1765 and his mother was Susanna Krebs/Crabbs

b. 1764 in Fallowfield (above). I believe your Susanna who married Robt. Downing was my Catherine

Hawk's sister. When I find out more, I will let you know. How are you kin to Susanna/Robert D.?

I have Flaugher lineage back to immigration and have been interding to work on the Hawks, but have just not

gotten to it! -- Judy"

I have tryed to reconnect with Judy in Jan. of 2004 and was unable. Because I don't know the birth date of

Adam and Mary were the parents of nine children: Margaret; Allison; Sarah Jane; Martha J.; Mariander;

HC Newspaper 20 Aug 1891: "Adam Hawk, probably one of the oldest settlers in this township, is slowly

dying of dropsy. He is in his 80th years, and the attending physician, Dr. King, of Greenfield, is of the

opinion that he will not last many days. Mr. Hawk is a good citizen. One of his many peculiarities was that

he never rode to town; he invariably walked."

HC newspaper 4 Feb. 1892: "Adam Hawk, a venerable old man, over eighty years of age, has crossed the

Great River and his body was buried at the Philadelphia Cemetery. His funeral was probably the largest ever

assembled at that place. It was a solemn occasion and but few dry eyes among his many kindred and old

neighbors. He was an honest man, kind father, frank, truthful and a Christian. He was buried beside his good

wife who had not long since preceded him. His residence in this County dates back nearly sixty years; he

resided on a farm on the banks of Sugar Creek for many years and later removed to a farm in Center

Township. He told the writer that he had no uneasiness about his future, his peace had long been made and

only awaited the Master's call. Farewell, old friend. Signed, A Friend of Fifty Years."

Taken from the Book Portrait and Biographical Album, of Vermilion County, Illinois , pub. in 1889 by

Chapman Brothers of Chicago, page 569, under Charles Leonard Downing, we find this about his Parents:

" The opening years of the life of our subject were spent in Mason County, Ky., where he was born March

21, 1838. His parents, Robert and Susan (Haw) Downing, were natives respectively of Kentucky and Ohio,

the latter born a few miles from the "Beautiful River." They were married in the Buckeye State and lived

there and in Kentucky until their removal to Marion County, Ind., to which they removed about 1849. The

father opened up a farm from the wilderness, where he spent the remainder of his days, dying in January,

1882, at the age of sixty-six years. The mother still occupies the old homestead and is now about seventy-one

years old. Their five children were named respectively, Allie, Lucretia, Charles L., Susan A. and James

Robert, who are all living."
