De Moss

My De Moss ancestors

01. Count Louis Dumas was born in 1669 in de Montaigne, France. He died in the Netherlands. He was a Huguenot of noble and wealthy Protestant who fled from France in October 1685 and settled in Holland. His wife's name is unknown. He had 2 sons: Louis and Charles, and possibly other children. His son, Louis II came to America about 1700. (Source)  The source listed here mentions 5 earlier generations of Louis which need to be researched.  Another source is DeMoss Family in America by Mrs. G. L. Caughron

02. Louis DeMoss II son of Louis was born in Holland in 1684. Louis came to America with brother Charles as stowaways on a ship. Charles DeMoss was killed by indians, being unable to escape because of injuries received before he came over. One tradition says that Charles died unmarried, another has it that he left a family of small children. Brother, Louis, (our connection) married the daughter of a Virginia planter (unkn last name) and raised a large family. (Source)

03. Louis DeMoss Jr. son of Louis was born about 1708, probably in Maryland. His will was dated 17 Jun 1743 in Orange Co., colony of Virginia. He wed to Catherine in Deer Creek, St. Johns Parish, Baltimore, MD. Birth and land records of Baltimore Co MD, (now Harford Co.) prove that the Louis DeMoss family first settled in Maryland before going to Virginia. The earliest DeMoss record found in America is in Harford Co. MD, the earliest date being about 1700. The first land records naming Louis (Lewis) DeMoss is in Baltimore Co. ND, 20 Sep 1717.  Louis DeMoss had left Harford Co. MD in 1735 and moved to Orange Co. VA. He and a son built a mill on Mill Creek where it emptied into the Opequon River. He is thought to be buried in the churchyard of Morgan's Chapel on Opequon Creek where he attended church. Burial place has not been proven, and there has been some controversy over this matter.
