My earliest known Ingersoll ancestors

I descend from both John Ingersoll of Westfield and Richard Ingersoll of Salem on 2 separate family lines.  To date there has been no relationship found between them.

John Ingersoll of Westfield was born abt. 1626 and died on Sep 02, 1684 in Westfield, Hampden Co., MA.

Richard Ingersoll of Salem was born Abt. 1588 and died on Jul 21, 1644 in Salem, Essex Co., MA.  

 

John Ingersoll of Westfield Line of Descent

01. John Inkersall was born about 1567.  He married Rose Staley (Taley) on December 02, 1592 in St. Werburghs, Derby, England.   John died on August 18, 1617 in St. Werburghs.

02. Thomas Inkersall, son of John and Rose was born about 1593 in Derby, England.  He married Margery Eaton, daughter of John Eaton and Elizabeth Hudson on December 15, 1620 in St. Dunstans, Stepney, Middlesex, England.  Thomas died on May 30, 1681 in St. Werburghs, Derby, England.

03. John Ingersoll, son of Thomas and Margery arrived in Salem,Ma. on the Mayflower (not the original landing) on May 15, 1629 and was an original settler of Westfield. He was the first innkeeper at Great Barrington,Ma. and he was a large land owner, parish treasurer, and one of the "Seven Pillars of the Church" at Westfield.  John was thrice married. He married first in abt. 1652 to Dorothy Lord, she was born Jan. 1631 died Jan. 1657. She was a daughter of Thomas Lord, said to be a French Hugenot, came on the "William and Mary" from England to Dorchester, and was one of the first settlers of Hartford, Ct. John married (2) Abigail Bascom in 1656, daughter of Thomas Bascom and Avis. He married (3) Mary Hunt in abt. 1668. She was a sister of Jonathan Hunt of Northampton, Mass. Her mother was Mary Webster, dau. of John Webster, one of the first settlers of Hartford, Ct and was the fifth Governor of the colony of Conn.  John Ingersoll died on September 03, 1684 in Salem, MA.

04. Ester Ingersoll, daughter of John and Abigail was born on August 24, 1663 in Northampton, MA.  She married (1) William Gurley.  After his death, she married Benoni Jones, son of Griffith Jones and Sarah on January 23, 1689 by whom she had 4 children.  She was a victim of the Poscmmuock massacre on May 13, 1704 that killed her husband and most of her children.  The indians took her to Canada as a prisoner where she later died (1705) while being tormented by Catholic priests trying to convert her to their religion.  I descend from Hester and Benoni's son, Benjamin Jones who survived the massacre and married Patience Evarts

 

Richard Ingersoll of Salem Line of Descent

01. George Ingersoll was born in 1562 in Edworth, Bedfordshire, England.  He married Dorothy Morleigh (Moreland).  George died in 1644.

02. Richard Ingersoll, son of George and Dorothy was born on March 10, 1586 in Edworth, Bedfordshire, England.  He married Ann Langley, daughter of Thomas Langley and Ann on October 20, 1611 in Sandy, Bedfordshire, England.  They came to New England in the immigration of 1629 (Winthrop Fleet).  He lived for the next 15 years in Salem, MA.  Richard died on July 21, 1644 in Salem, Essex, MA.  

03. Sarah Ingersoll, daughter of Richard and Ann was born on July 01, 1627 in Sutton, England.  She married William Haynes, son of Walter Haines and Mary Watford in 1652 in Salem, MA.  Sarah died in 1719 in Houlton, MA.  I descend from their son Jonathan Haynes who married Sarah Moulton.

Richard Ingersoll came to America on the Winthrop fleet in 1629.  Descendants of Richard are eligible to join the Winthrop Society which is open to all with proven descent of an ancestor from the Winthrop fleet.
